Any scuba diver knows that some of the world’s best attractions are not visible from land. The Eiffel Tower and the London Bridge are great, but seeing manta rays, sharks, and schools of colorful fish in their natural habitat is an ethereal experience. Check out these 10 spots for a dive — some favorites in the Gogobot community — and then grab your gear and start planning your trip.

 

1. Bunaken Island, Indonesia

The vibrant coral reef is great for observing a wide array of marine life including Commensal Shrimp, Black Tip Reef Sharks and Eagle Rays.

 

2. Molokini Island, Hawaii

One of only three volcanic calderas in the world, Molokini Island harbours a unique ecosystem with more than 250 species of fish and excellent visibility.

 

3. Palau Tioman, Malaysia

With colorful gardens of both hard and soft coral, as well as a plethora of marine life, such as turtles, rays and reef sharks, Palau Tioman is an especially great spot for underwater photography.

 

4. Koh Tao, Thailand

A great spot for beginners with cheap courses, numerous dive sites and a colorful coral reef, the island is known for its turtles; in fact, “Koh Tao” translates to “Turtle Island” in Thai.

 

5. Cane Bay, US Virgin Islands

The most spectacular portion of the Cane Bay shoreline is an astounding coral reef known as “The Wall,” which is home to many sea creatures including reef sharks, barracuda and even dolphins.

 

6. Cenotes Kukulkan and Chac Mool, Mexico

In this amazing cave diving site, divers can admire the remarkable stalagmites above while wandering through striking underground waterways.

 

7. Caye Caulker, Belize

The most prominent and popular feature of the Caye Caulker area is the 185-mile-long Barrier Reef, which runs parallel to the coast and is known for being a hub for marine life such as groupers, white tip sharks and hammerhead sharks.

 

8. Dahab, Egypt

Dahab is known for its famous “Blue Hole,” a 94-meter-deep sinkhole which is famous for its unique coral and reef fish.

 

9. San Pedro, Belize

San Pedro’s biggest attraction is the Belize Barrier Reef, the second biggest coral reef in the world. Its large ecosystem serves as a hub for turtles, rays and sharks, the latter two of which can be found in large numbers in an area known as “Shark Ray Alley.”

 

10. Las Marietas Islands, Mexico

These islands have both underwater tunnels and an amazing underwater cave, plus they accommodate a whole host of sea life, ranging from massive sea turtles to manta rays.
